The German Instrument of Surrender was the legal instrument that established the armistice ending World War II in Europe. It was signed by representatives of the Oberkommando der Wehrmacht (OKW) and the Allied Expeditionary Force on May 7 (French and Soviet representatives signed as witnesses), and by the head of OKW and the representatives of British, American and Soviet High Command on May 8, 1945. The date is known in the West as Victory in Europe Day, whereas in post-Soviet states the Victory Day is celebrated on May 9. In Germany, it is known as the Day of Capitulation A collection of over 200 historical newsreels. Each newsreel runs approximately 3 minutes and covers the most important events of the first half of the 20th century.
